Climb the Clinic 2020

The 10th annual Climb the Clinic, a fundraiser sponsored by the Mayo Fellows’ Association, attracted 180 Mayo Clinic faculty, staff, employees, students, residents, fellows, and postdoctoral and research fellows on Saturday, Feb. 1. Climb the Clinic involves climbing the stairs of four of the tallest buildings on campus – Mayo, Plummer, Siebens and Stabile – for a total of 1,325 steps. Participants take elevators instead of stairs on the descents. Participants can compete, do it for fun or run as part of a team.

The event benefits Mayo Clinic Hope Fund, which supports patients and families with food, lodging and costs of receiving care at Mayo locations.

Women’s leaders

Cytotechnologist Sarah J. Silber, CT(ASCP) (CYTO ’15), was the first-place finisher in the women’s category. Silber took second place last year.

Placing second was Ann Moyer, M.D., Ph.D., Division of Laboratory Genetics and Genomics, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. Dr. Moyer was the top-placing physician in 2019 and 2020.

“The Mayo Fellows’ Association put on another great event this year!,” says Dr. Moyer. “It was fun to meet up with a group from our lab team outside of work for an active Saturday morning. Our lab values helping Mayo Clinic’s patients and others in need, so knowing that proceeds from the event went to the HOPE fund made it feel like it was still a good idea to participate even when our legs and lungs suggested otherwise part way up each building!  Maybe we’ll have to incorporate stair climbing into our lab meetings to prepare for next year.”

Taking third and fourth places among the women were Joselle Cook, M.B.B.S., a hematology/oncology resident; and Linnea Baudhuin, Ph.D., Division of Laboratory Genetics and Genomics, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology.

Men’s leaders

Javier Ocariz-Elsen, a health unit coordinator, won this year. He also won in 2018. His brother, Santiago Ocariz, R.N. (NA ’22), a student in the MCSHS Nurse Anesthesia Program, placed second. He won the event in 2019 and 2017.

Taking third and fourth places were David J. Hansen, a technician in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; and Courtney Baker, M.D., a resident in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery.
